Youth Brass Band

with Fran Kick and the Brass Band of Battle Creek

OPPORTUNITY: In the fall of 2012, Jennifer Rupp the Executive Director of the World Famous Brass Band of Battle Creek contacted Fran Kick to help incorporate a leadership training piece into their education programming and master classes/clinics for instrumental students in the state of Michigan. The BBBC is an ensemble made up of the best brass and percussion musicians in the world (including Steven Mead, Wycliffe Gordon, Rex Richardson, Jens Lindemann, Chris Jaudes, Woody English, Marty Erickson, just to name a few).

RESULTS: Fran Kick created an opening keynote experience for all the students as well as a hands-on interactive leadership team building breakout session to be a part of their one-day event in June 2013.

UPDATE: Fran Kick returned in 2014 to KICK IT IN with the 2nd Brass Band of Battle Creek Youth Brass Band Day. In addition, Judy Kick created some materials to help promote the program. 2014 had twice as many students attend year over year compared to 2013. Fran came back once again in 2015 to a record enrollment for the 3rd Annual BBBC Youth Brass Band Day.

Normally I don’t enjoy listening to leadership speakers because they end up telling us what we need to do in life. However, I really enjoyed listening to Fran Kick because I felt that he was just putting some ideas out there for us and then stood back to let us make what we wanted of them. I took away from what he said not because “I had to” but because they were things that “I wanted to” take with me for the future. Though his message was simple, it had great value and I wish that many of the people I know could have heard what he said. Hearing him speak and then interacting with people who embodied his message was very good reinforcement. It truly was an amazing experience.”

I loved that it wasn’t just playing some music day where we went and played music all day long. I liked that we got the talks from Mr. Kick, and that the Brass Band members took time out of their day to work with us on improving our technique and other things to make us better musicians. It was truly a great experience. Thank You!”
