KICKin’ IT IN for 15 Years at the Business Professionals of America NLC Leadership Academy

From 2004-2018 we KICKed IT IN at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference. Creating and presenting leadership programming for middle school, high school, college students, as well as their BPA Advisors. Our work with BPA every year at their national conference evolved into a signature program for this leading career and technical student organization (CTSO). The BPA Leadership Academy enabled students pursuing careers in business management, office administration, information technology, and other related career fields to interact with other student leaders from all over the U.S. learning how to develop as leaders in the classroom and beyond.

Program Objectives:

  • Increase individual leadership competencies and how to relate them to real-life situations.
  • Focus on organizational leadership and how to develop leadership in others.
  • Learn how to enhance personal leadership skills, pay attention, respond appropriately, model effective communication, encourage cooperation and collaboration.
  • Investigate leadership values including self-awareness, ethical congruence, and commitment to completion.
  • Participate in experiential hands-on activities in group, partner, and individual situations.
  • Become more reflective and learn from your own experiences as well as other people’s experiences.
  • Learn how to nurture more leadership around you so that others can help you make things happen.

The students that participated in the Leadership Academy were transformed and very excited. They enjoyed the activities and learned so much from the presenters. It was a though I brought four kids to Nationals but returned with four young men and women. The experience was one that could never be duplicated in the classroom or in textbooks.

BPA National Post-Secondary President
Getting involved with the 2008 Leadership Academy made me gain a greater appreciation for life, and it motivated me to want to become an even greater leader. I recommend every student to experience this at least once. Fran Kick does an unbelievable job getting through to students. He makes students break out of their shells and teaches them how to Reach New Heights!lyndsay_robinson_50x50

If I were speaking to someone who was thinking about going to Nationals to be in the Academy, I would tell them to GO FOR IT! It's an experience that I will never forget.

Jessica Guerrero
BPA Chapter President & Secondary National Historian
As an attendee at the 2009 Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference, I experienced the energy and wisdom of Fran Kick during his 2-day program KICK IT IN and TAKE THE LEAD. I must say I have never been more excited or enlightened by a speaker as I did in my eight hours with him. He has great insight and a likeability that is unreal. I recommend his presentation to everyone, age is no object. He is sure to grab your attention and captivate you.Jessica Guerrero

The Leadership Academy was a great opportunity for me to view leadership from not only a different perspective, but from a more fun and exciting one as well. It was an awesome experience with a lot of great insights into leadership. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to make a difference in any way.

Sarah Marie Key
Hutchinson High School, Kansas
The best thing about the Leadership Academy was that I really felt like I was doing something. Competing is fun but I definitely enjoyed interning more than anything. The workshops were really fun too. I learned a lot and got to meet tons of new people.

Jesus Villegas
Pecos High School, Texas
Thank you for your leadership conference and new food for thought. I have learned things that I will always use in life. Thanks for your guidance and tools.
